About
Sebastian Zamarripa is a jazz trombonist, bass trombonist, composer, and educator from the San Francisco Bay Area, currently based in Baltimore. His work is shaped by a fascination with rhythm, time, and texture, drawing from Balkan asymmetry, Latin American groove traditions, and rhythmically dense contemporary styles such as progressive metal. He is especially interested in how structure and improvisation can intersect, and his music increasingly reflects his mixed Albanian and Mexican-American heritage, as well as themes inspired by the brain, memory, and patterns found in nature.As a performer, Sebastian has appeared with ensembles including Fran Vielma's Pan-American Jazz Orchestra, the Javier Nero Jazz Orchestra, and the Miguel Zenón Big Band. At the Peabody Institute, he continues to develop as both a soloist and collaborator through performance study, ensemble work, and interdisciplinary artistic exploration. He also participates in Johns Hopkins Hospital's "Music for a While" program, where he performs weekly solo jazz trombone for patients and staff in clinical settings, using music to create moments of comfort, connection, and healing.Outside of performance, Sebastian's work in neuroscience and community outreach has deepened his perspective as an artist. Through research, clinical exposure, and arts-based outreach, he has seen how creative work can support communication, empathy, and care across different settings. These experiences continue to shape his interest in patient-centered medicine and the role of the arts in human connection.Sebastian is completing dual bachelor's degrees in Jazz Studies at the Peabody Institute and Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University. He plans to pursue a Master's in Jazz Studies at Peabody before attending medical school, with the goal of making both music and science more accessible and meaningful to the communities he serves.
